The goal of 'Dutch Downwind' is to showcase how good the conditions we have in The Netherlands are along with how awesome the community is that we have

Who am I?
My name is Jon Mann, I'm a dutch (mostly english speaking) foiler who caught the foiling bug in 2019 following a combination of injuries (concussion wakeboarding, torn MCL wakeboarding and broken rib kiteboarding).
It started with kite foiling, then grew into prone foiling, dock starting, wing foiling and ultimately SUP downwind foiling (and now parawinging too).
As my downwinding addiction grew, I began sharing my stoke for the sport through my instagram page, my blog "Next Steps Watersports" and also through coaching as a Coach in the Coach Casey Club - an online coaching community founded by James Casey.
As much as I have travelled around the world to foil, there is something about the North Sea which keeps it up there as one of my favourite places to foil.

How did it start?
It started with a Whatsapp group of 5 stoked foilers, who via via all came together in 2022 because we were all interested in the idea of downwind foiling.
Kjell, our Belgian neighbour and token dutchman was the first in Benelux to do a SUP downwind run in 2020 as far as I am aware which then inspired Niek (you can read about it here). Separately around the same time myself and Jannes (who I met through prone foiling) had been frothing on all the Voyager content and started practicing downwind foiling with the wing and doing prone shore runs around the same time. Jannes had been hyping the lakes to me as the perfect training ground for SUP DW foiling and as an ex SUP paddler, Jannes caught on that Niek was also getting into it through Social media. Eventually we all managed to link up, for our first SUP foil DW run together in 2022 (myself, Niek, Jannes and his good mate Olivier) well and truly kicking off the addiction. From here it grew into a core group of guys with the addition of Sibren (through instagram after we saw a clip of him on the Markermeer in 45 knots), Joep (2 x Masters ICF long distance SUP world champion), Thomas (Niek's main buddy an ex SUP racer) and of course the legend himself Ike (the man that first let me try his prone set up randomly in the surf line up which truly got the ball rolling past kite foiling for me).

Dutch Downwind
As more and more people became interested in the sport, a single Whatsapp group couldn't cover the range in levels and desires for different runs. So the Whatsapp group evolved into a Whatsapp community made up of a main chat and then smaller groups for organising logistics in different regions of the coast and the lakes. With this growth, I decided to create an instagram page that wasn't commercially connected to any brands that could show case how good downwinding in The Netherlands was, but also to showcase the growing community that we have, because as we all know, without community downwinding is no where near as fun!
Reach out if you are a Dutch foiler or visiting foiling who would like to be added to the Whatsapp Community
